Museums and Cultural Venues
Berkeley Art Museum (BAMPFA)
Berkeley’s premier art museum, featuring an extensive collection of over 20,000 artworks, with rotating contemporary and historical exhibitions. The space is beautifully designed, allowing leisurely browsing and contemplation. Free admission for children 12 and under; suggested donation for adults ($10–$15, but “pay what you wish”). Perfect for an hour or two of indoor exploration, especially if you enjoy visual art. Check current exhibitions before visiting.
Hours vary; typically Tuesday–Sunday. Closed Mondays. BART-adjacent location makes access easy from downtown.
Lawrence Hall of Science
This hands-on science museum remains an excellent indoor activity during rain. The building houses interactive exhibits, a planetarium with live shows, and educational programs. You can explore for 2–3 hours. Admission required (check for discounts and special rainy-day hours). This is especially good for families with kids.
Open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Aftel Archive of Curious Scents
A unique museum dedicated to fragrance history and artistry. The collection includes antique fragrance artifacts, aromatic materials, and century-old reference books. Small, intimate space. Free admission (open Saturdays only; check hours). A quirky, engaging 1–2 hour visit for those interested in olfactory culture.
UC Berkeley Campus
Explore the campus indoors on a rainy day. Walk through Doe Library’s beautiful interior (the oldest academic library on the West Coast), admire the historic architecture, and visit the Bancroft Library if special exhibitions are open. The campus also has several smaller museums and galleries. Rainy weather makes for a contemplative, less crowded campus experience.
Shopping and Browsing
Shattuck Avenue (North Berkeley and Gourmet Ghetto)
On a rainy day, explore the covered shops, delis, and food vendors along Shattuck Avenue. Browse specialty markets, bakeries, cheese shops, and restaurants. Many shops offer indoor window browsing and serendipitous discoveries. Stop at Gregoire for a sandwich, Cheeseboard for pizza, or simply explore.
Elmwood: College Avenue
Tree-lined College Avenue in Elmwood offers independent boutiques, bookstores, clothing shops, and galleries. Slower pace than downtown, more intimate storefronts. Several cafes where you can warm up with coffee or tea. Elmwood is particularly pleasant on rainy days—the tree canopy provides some shelter, and the village-like atmosphere is cozy.
Fourth Street (West Berkeley)
Fourth Street between Shattuck and Hearst has eclectic boutiques, design shops, home goods stores, and galleries. Less touristy than downtown, more local flavor. Several cafes and restaurants for breaks.
Downtown Berkeley (Shattuck Avenue)
The core downtown has department stores, bookstores (check for Moe’s Books), clothing shops, and galleries. BART provides covered access from the station. On rainy days, the downtown urban environment feels vibrant rather than dreary. Explore the Arts District and nearby galleries.
Dining and Cafes
Coffee Shops
Perfect for rainy days. Settle into any excellent local cafe: Peet’s, Jaffa, Cafenated, Caffe Strada, CoRo, or others. Order a cappuccino or hot chocolate, grab a pastry or sandwich, and spend 1–2 hours reading, writing, or chatting. This is quintessential Berkeley.
Restaurants for Lunch or Dinner
Rainy days are perfect for lingering over a meal. Excellent options include:
- Chez Panisse Café (Gourmet Ghetto): Wood-fired pizza, seasonal plates, no-reservation upstairs cafe.
- Bar Panisse (Gourmet Ghetto): Seasonal small plates and natural wine, walk-in only.
- Gather (Downtown): Sustainable, farm-to-table cuisine with vegetarian and meat options.
- Via del Corso: Italian trattoria.
Many restaurants are less crowded on rainy days and offer warm, social dining environments.
Bakeries and Delis
Pick up supplies from local bakeries and delis, then create a picnic indoors (a comfortable cafe, your hotel, or home). Cheeseboard, The Pasta Shop, and various neighborhood bakeries offer excellent supplies.
Theater and Entertainment
Berkeley Repertory Theatre
Check for current productions. The Rep stages contemporary plays and classic works in a well-designed theater space. Evening shows are ideal on rainy days. Performances typically 8 p.m. (weekdays and weekends). Ticket prices vary; often $25–$75 depending on seat and show.
Freight and Salvage
A legendary music venue hosting folk, blues, jazz, and other genres. Check their calendar for rainy-day evening performances. Tickets typically $15–$35. The intimate venue has a warm, communal atmosphere perfect for wet weather.
Ashkenaz
A music and dance venue featuring eclectic live performances. Check their schedule. Another great option for evening entertainment.
Movie Theaters
The Elmwood Cinema (College Avenue) is an old-fashioned, independent movie theater showing current films. Check their schedule. A traditional, enjoyable rainy-day activity.
Bookstores and Libraries
Moe’s Books
A legendary used bookstore with multiple floors and extensive collections. Browsing here can occupy 2–3 hours, especially on a rainy day. The store has nooks and corners, and a casual, intellectual vibe. Perfect for book lovers.
Other Bookstores
Several independent bookstores and sections in larger retailers. Browse, settle in, and enjoy the rainy-day atmosphere.
UC Berkeley Library System
Libraries are free, warm, and welcoming. The Doe Library and other university libraries offer beautiful spaces and study nooks (some may be reserved for students, but some areas are open to the public).
Galleries and Arts Spaces
Berkeley has numerous galleries, especially in the downtown Arts District and around the campus. On a rainy day, explore galleries at your own pace. Many are free or pay-what-you-wish. Small, intimate art spaces often feel especially inviting during rain.

Why Rainy Days Are Good
Berkeley’s rainy season (November–March) brings moody skies, cooler temperatures, and fewer tourists. Museums and cafes feel more intimate and less crowded. The city has a cozy, intellectual quality—rain suits Berkeley’s bookish, introspective character. Rather than viewing rain as an obstacle, enjoy it as a chance to experience the city’s indoor culture more fully.
Rainy days in Berkeley are perfect for slowing down, exploring museums, reading, and experiencing the city’s cafe and restaurant culture.
