BART: Your Main Gateway
BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is Berkeley’s primary connection to the region. The downtown Berkeley station at 2066 Shattuck Avenue, near the heart of downtown, is convenient for most attractions. BART reaches San Francisco, Oakland, and surrounding areas in 15–45 minutes. Trains run early morning through late night (typically 5 a.m.–1 a.m.). Use Clipper Card or purchase single tickets at stations.
A significant development in 2025 is BayPass, a transit pass loaded onto your Clipper Card. Students get unlimited free rides on BART, AC Transit, Bear Transit, and most other Bay Area transit agencies as part of their transit fees. Non-students can buy individual fares or day passes. For one-time visits, a BART day pass or multi-ride ticket makes sense.
AC Transit: Local Buses
AC Transit operates local bus lines throughout Berkeley. A single ride costs $2.50; a day pass is $6. Key routes include:
- Route 1 and 6: Connect downtown to North Berkeley (Gourmet Ghetto), campus, and Solano Avenue
- Route 51B and 51M: Connect downtown to the Berkeley Hills (Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Botanical Garden)
- Routes 40, 43, 70: Connect downtown to Elmwood and South Berkeley
Download the AC Transit app or check their website for real-time arrival information. Buses run frequently during daytime hours (every 10–20 minutes on major routes) and less frequently evenings and weekends.
Berkeley is Walkable
Much of Berkeley is pedestrian-friendly, with well-maintained sidewalks and relatively flat terrain (except the hills). Major destinations cluster geographically:
- Downtown: All concentrated along Shattuck Avenue between BART (south) and campus (north). Plan 20 minutes to walk from BART to campus.
- North Berkeley & Gourmet Ghetto: Shattuck Avenue is walkable from downtown or take the 1 bus. Plan 30–40 minutes on foot from BART.
- UC Berkeley Campus: Open to public. Self-guided or free guided tours available from the Visitor Center.
- Elmwood & College Avenue: South of campus, walkable from campus (15 minutes) or take the 6 bus from downtown.
- Fourth Street: West of campus; take the 7 bus from downtown or walk (20 minutes from campus).
Biking
Berkeley is increasingly bike-friendly, with protected bike lanes on major streets and connections to regional trails. Bike rentals are available near campus (check local shops). The Ohlone Greenway is a tree-lined 1.5-mile path through Berkeley, connected to the larger 5.3-mile greenway extending to Albany and El Cerrito—perfect for a leisurely ride.
UC Bear Transit
UC Berkeley operates free shuttle buses for students, faculty, and staff. Visitors can check if certain routes are accessible, though many focus on campus-internal destinations.
Getting to Attractions Without a Car
UC Berkeley Campus
BART downtown + walk 20 minutes, or take the 1 or 6 bus from downtown and walk into campus.
Lawrence Hall of Science
Take the 51B or 51M bus from downtown (30–40 minutes), which drops near the base of the hills. A short walk or shuttle may be required to reach the Hall. Alternatively, take BART to the downtown station and walk north to the bus stop.
UC Botanical Garden
Same as above; the 51B/51M also serves the garden area.
Gourmet Ghetto (North Berkeley)
Take the 1 bus from downtown Shattuck, or walk north through campus and surrounding neighborhoods (40–50 minutes from BART).
Elmwood & Fourth Street Shopping
Take the 6 bus southbound from downtown, or walk 15 minutes south from campus.
Berkeley Rose Garden
Take a bus to Euclid Avenue (routes 7, 9, or others) or ask locals; it’s in a residential area less pedestrian-friendly for those without a car, but manageable with buses.
Berkeley Marina
Take the 51A or other waterfront-bound bus, or bike via the Ohlone Greenway.
Money-Saving Transit Tips
- BayPass (Students): If you’re a student, this is your best option.
- Day Pass: If not a student, a $6 AC Transit day pass covers unlimited local bus rides.
- BART Clipper Card: Reload as needed; Clipper is slightly cheaper than single tickets.
- Walk When Possible: Berkeley is compact; walking between nearby neighborhoods saves transit fares and offers street-level exploration.
Getting from San Francisco
BART from San Francisco to Berkeley takes 25–35 minutes depending on the line and time of day. Exit at the downtown Berkeley station and walk or bus to your destination.
Accessibility Notes
BART stations are fully accessible with elevators. Most AC Transit buses have wheelchair lifts and audio/visual arrival announcements. However, some Berkeley streets, especially in the hills, are steep; the neighborhoods on Shattuck Avenue and downtown are relatively flat and accessible.
Bottom Line
Living or visiting Berkeley without a car is entirely feasible. BART and AC Transit connect all major neighborhoods and attractions. Walking is rewarding for experiencing local character, street life, and architecture. A combination of transit and walking lets you explore Berkeley thoroughly and affordably.
