Overview

Berkeley enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild, mostly dry summers and cool, wet winters. Coastal fog, bay breezes, and proximity to hills mean weather can vary significantly within the city and change quickly throughout the day.

Seasonal Climate

Summer (June–September) brings warm, mostly dry days with average highs around 75–78°F. Mornings and evenings cool down, often to the mid-50s, especially near the coast. Fog frequently rolls in from the bay, particularly in the mornings, and can last into mid-morning or even afternoon on some days. Pack layers to adapt to warm afternoons and cool mornings. Rain is rare during summer months. August and September are typically the warmest months.

Winter (December–February) sees mild temperatures averaging 50–60°F for highs and 45–50°F for lows. Most of Berkeley’s annual rainfall (about 9 inches total) falls between November and February, with January and February as the wettest months. Bring a waterproof jacket and umbrella. Snow is extremely rare at sea level but may appear in the Berkeley Hills during unusual winter storms.

Spring (March–May) features warming temperatures (60–70°F) and variable conditions as winter systems move out and summer patterns begin. Late March and April often see some rain, but by May, dry conditions increasingly dominate. Wildflowers bloom during this season, and the city is typically less crowded than summer.

Fall (October–November) can bring some of the year’s best weather—warm days (70–75°F), lower humidity, and reduced fog. October is often considered the most pleasant month. Rain begins increasing in late November as winter approaches.

Fog and Fire Season

Berkeley’s famous fog rolls in from the Pacific during summer and early fall, typically cooling the waterfront and lower elevations while inland hills remain warmer and clearer. Fog is part of Berkeley’s charm but can surprise visitors expecting hot, sunny weather. Bring a light jacket.

California’s fire season (roughly June–October) can affect air quality on some days, particularly in late summer and early fall. Check air quality forecasts (airnow.gov) before your visit if you have respiratory concerns. Fires rarely threaten Berkeley directly, though smoke from distant fires can create hazy skies.

Best Times to Visit

Late spring (April–May) and early fall (September–October) offer ideal conditions—warm days, lower fog, less rain, and fewer crowds than peak summer.

Summer (June–August) brings visitors from around the world. Expect crowded attractions, higher hotel prices, and possible fog. Bring layers and patience for popular sites.

Winter (December–February) is quietest and least expensive, but rainy days are common. This season suits travelers interested in museums, cafes, and indoor activities.

University Calendar Effects

Graduation and Commencement (mid-May) brings tens of thousands of visitors, families, and graduates to Berkeley. Hotels book far in advance, restaurants are busy, campus tours are crowded, and parking becomes scarce. If you’re not attending graduation events, consider visiting before or after this peak.

Move-in Weekends (late August–early September) see families arriving to move students into dorms, creating similar congestion downtown and near the campus.

Academic Calendar (September–May, with winter break mid-December to early January) means the campus and surrounding areas are busier during the school year. Summer is quieter on campus but busier with tourists.

Spring Break (typically mid-March) can bring increased student visitor traffic to the city.

Packing Recommendations

  • Year-round: Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and a light layer (sweater or jacket)
  • Summer: Layers for morning fog and afternoon warmth; sunglasses
  • Winter: Waterproof jacket or raincoat; umbrella; warmer layers
  • Spring/Fall: Transitional layers as conditions vary

When to Book

Book accommodations as early as possible if visiting during May graduation, late August move-in, or peak summer (July–early August). Winter, spring, and fall often offer better prices and fewer crowds, with mild, pleasant weather perfect for exploring the city.
