Overview
West Berkeley’s Fourth Street district is a vibrant hub for independent shopping, dining, and design, bounded by Cedar Street, Sixth Street, University Avenue, and Frontage Road. Home to over 80 retailers and food establishments, Fourth Street attracts East Bay residents, UC Berkeley students, and visitors from San Francisco seeking quality shopping and restaurants. The area buzzes with weekly maker fairs, indie boutiques, and diverse cuisines.
History and Character
West Berkeley, previously known as Ocean View, sits west of San Pablo Avenue and east of the San Francisco Bay. In the 1960s, the city envisioned an industrial park, moving and destroying roughly 80 historic houses in the process. In the mid-1970s, developer Abrams, Millikan & Kent reimagined the failed project as a shopping district featuring furniture, textiles, and design products from small businesses, opening the popular Fourth Street Grill. This transformation established Fourth Street’s character as a destination for design-conscious shopping and food.
Main Streets and Boundaries
Fourth Street is the primary commercial corridor, running north-south. The neighborhood extends from Cedar Street on the south to Sixth Street on the north, and from University Avenue on the east to Frontage Road (near the bay) on the west. The area is characterized by open, modern commercial architecture with wide sidewalks and a pedestrian-friendly environment. Multiple smaller streets provide additional retail and dining opportunities.
What to See
Fourth Street is a shopping and dining destination rather than a traditional tourist attraction. The street itself is the primary draw, with window shopping and people-watching popular pastimes. Weekly maker fairs bring local artisans and crafts to the street. The variety of retail—from Crate & Barrel Outlet to independent boutiques to the Apple Store—appeals to different shopping interests. The walkable layout makes exploration easy and pleasant.
Where to Eat and Shop
Restaurants include Tacubaya (Mexican), Picante (Latin American), Sanctuary Bistro, La Palmita, Gaumenkitzel, Iyasare, and Lalime’s. Long-standing establishments include Spenger’s Fresh Fish Grotto and Irish restaurant Brennan’s. Shops range from Warby Parker to Lululemon to Madewell, Marine Layer, Framebridge, Le Labo, and Modern Animal. The Gardener and other design-focused retailers appeal to home and garden enthusiasts. Check websites for current hours and menus.
Getting There
Fourth Street is accessible via car, bicycle, and AC Transit bus service. The closest BART station is Downtown Berkeley (approximately 10-15 minutes), reachable by bus or bike. Driving is the most popular access method. The area is pleasant for cycling, with bike lanes on nearby streets. Street parking and small lots serve the commercial district.
Parking
Street parking is available along Fourth Street and surrounding blocks, though spaces fill during peak shopping hours and weekends. Paid parking structures are available, and rates are posted. Weekend visitor parking is reasonable compared to downtown Berkeley. The walkable district layout makes street parking convenient for exploring multiple shops and restaurants.
