Lawrence Hall of Science
This is Berkeley’s premier family destination. Located at 1 Centennial Drive in the Berkeley Hills, the Hall offers hands-on science exhibits, a planetarium with live interactive shows, an animal discovery room, and a 3-D science theater. Kids can explore Forces that Shape the Bay (water flow, erosion, telescopes), climb in the outdoor nature lab, and enjoy robotic dinosaurs and puppet theater.
Hours: Daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m. General admission varies; check for their Five Dollar Days Fridays for $5 reduced admission on all hands-on science activities. The Hall offers special events and seasonal programming. Plan 2–3 hours depending on age and interests.
From downtown Berkeley, take AC Transit bus 51B or 51M directly toward the hall (30–40 minutes). Parking is available on-site.
UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley
Just downhill from the Lawrence Hall of Science, this 34-acre garden showcases over 10,000 plant species from around the world, including rare and endangered plants. Kids enjoy exploring the different plant zones (Mediterranean, Asian, oak woodland) and discovering hidden garden nooks. The hillside setting offers excellent views and is less crowded than urban parks.
Open daily (hours vary seasonally; check website). Admission charged. Plan 1–2 hours. Great for strollers and walkers, though some areas are steep.
Codornices Park and the Famous Slide
Codornices Park, a free neighborhood park in North Berkeley, is famous among Bay Area families for its approximately 40-foot concrete slide. Kids bring a flattened cardboard box to slide down quickly. The park also has regular playground structures, open grass, and is open daily 6 a.m.–10 p.m. A simple but beloved attraction requiring minimal time and no admission.
UC Berkeley Campus
The campus offers free exploration and is engaging for older kids. Walk Sather Gate, climb the Campanile (95 steps for tower views), and see Doe Library. Free guided tours (90 minutes, led by student ambassadors) introduce campus history and student life. Tours depart from the Koret Visitor Center (2200 University Avenue). Kids ages 8+ typically enjoy campus tours; younger children may find self-guided exploration easier.
Berkeley Rose Garden
A free, 7.2-acre public garden on Euclid Avenue (between Bay View and Centennial), stunning May through September. Paved paths wind through blooming roses, offering a peaceful, family-friendly experience. Great for a casual stroll and photos. No admission. Plan 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Parks and Playgrounds
Tilden Regional Park (Berkeley Hills): A large regional park with hiking trails, a steam train (seasonal), a small lake, and picnic areas. Popular with families for easy walking, picnicking, and nature exploration. Free entry (parking fee may apply to some areas).
César Chávez Park (Berkeley Marina): Offers waterfront views, grassy open space, and bay views. Great for picnicking and walking. Free.
Ohlone Park: Along the Ohlone Greenway, features a colorful playground with climbing structures, an off-leash dog area, and garden beds. Free.
Museums and Indoor Activities
Berkeley Art Museum (BAMPFA): Free admission for children 12 and under. The museum has hands-on, interactive elements and an extensive art collection. Great for older kids interested in art. Check current hours.
